Gymnema sylvestre is a liana or climbing plant found in India and Southeast Asia. Gymnema is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for diabetes and in Japan as a weight loss aid.
Gymnema extract contains gymnemic acids which have been found to inhibit hypoglycemic activity (lowering blood sugar). The effectiveness of Gymnema extract in the treatment of diabetes has been proved by many human and animal studies dating as far back as 1926.
One particular long term human study of diabetic subjects demonstrated that Gymnema extract supplementation of 400mg/ day resulted in significantly reduced levels of blood sugar and free fatty acids. Cholesterol levels, in particular, were significantly reduced and brought to near normal levels. Following 18-20 months of Gymnema supplementation 21 of the 22 patients were able to reduce their intake of hypoglycaemic drugs with 5 subjects discontining conventional hypoglycaemic drugs entirely and maintaining their lowered blood glucose levels with Gymnema extract alone.
According to the study a possible explanation for this could be that Gymnema leaf extract may help to repair the cellular damage that causes diabetes (by helping to regenerate the insulin producing cells in the pancreas).
A clinical trial recently conducted in the US further supports these findings. Of 65 patients tested over the 90-day trial, Gymnema tablets reduced average fasting glucose levels by nearly 11%.
Sweet Taste Suppression
The sweet taste suppressant property, proved by many human studies, of Gymnema extract adds to its therapeutic value. Gymnemic acids interact with receptors on the tongue to suppress the sweet taste of all sweeteners. According to one particular study, treatment with Gymnema extracts reduced the sweetness of sweeteners by an average of 77% in human volunteers. The extract however, has no effect on taste receptors sensitive to bitter or salty substances.
