What are anti-oxidants?
Cells in the human body continuously produce unstable molecules known as free radicals. To become stable, free radicals absorb material from other molecules, damaging the cell structure. Over time, free radical damage to cell proteins and genetic material can leave the cell vulnerable to diseases like cancer.
Anti-oxidants are naturally occurring substances that reduce oxidation by de-activating free radicals.

Turmeric extract is a bright yellow/orange powder that has been used as a spice and a medicine in Asia for several centuries. The health benefits of turmeric are attributed to its active compound (Curcumin) a flavanoid that has been found to have many therapeutic uses.
Curcumin is an anti-oxidant and protects human cells from damage from free radicals. Studies indicate that Curcumin may possess anti-oxidant activity, comparable to vitamins C and E.
Curcumin has also been found to reduce inflammation and alleviate arthritis pain by inhibiting enzymes that cause inflammation and by increasing the production of natural cortisone (a steroid produced in the body that treats inflammation) by the adrenal glands.
In one clinical trial of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Curcumin supplementation reduced inflammation and pain and improved joint mobility. In another study, Curcumin was found more effective than placebo or phenylbutazone (an NSAID) for alleviating post-surgical inflammation.
Curcumin has also been shown to have anti-carcinogenic effects in numerous in-vitro and animal studies. In some of some of these studies, Curcumin supplementation reduced both the size and number of tumors.
Turmeric supplementation has been found safe. High levels of turmeric and Curcumin are used in Indian cooking and as a spice around the world, with no known side effects.
