Boswellia serrata is a tree found in South Asia and Africa. It secretes a gummy resin that's been used extensively in traditional Indian Ayurvedic and African folk medicine for many centuries to relieve joint pain and promote increased mobility.
The anti-inflammatory activity of Boswellia extract has been attributed to its active ingredients called Boswellic acids. These acids are thought to interact with cells suppressing the production of enzymes that contribute to inflammation and pain.
In one clinical study, patients with rheumatoid arthritis experienced significantly reduced pain and swelling following 3 months of Boswellia supplementation.
Boswellia has a long history of safe and effective use as a mild anti-inflammatory to reduce pain without many of the gastrointestinal side effects of conventional anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).
