Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a herb native to India and Africa that belongs to the pepper family. It is also known as Winter Cherry and Indian Ginseng. Ashwagandha is used extensively in Indian Ayurvedic medicines for its calming and fatigue-fighting properties.
Ashwagandha's active ingredients are chemical compounds known as withanolides. Extensive research conducted on withanolides indicates that they may boost immune system functioning, reduce inflammation and improve memory.
Ashwagandha also shows promise in the treatment of anxiety and depression. When the human body is under stress it secretes a hormone called cortisol. High levels of cortisol in the bloodstream has been associated with depression/ anxiety, lowered immunity, decline in mental performance and increased blood pressure. Withanolides reduce elevated cortisol levels enabling the body to return to its normal functioning.
Along with its calming properties studies show that Ashwagandha also exerts a testosterone-like effect, which may improve sex drive (libido).
